Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition System

The processes that the SCADA system monitors may include the facility, infrastructure or the industrial based processes. The industrial processes may encompass the power generation, refining, production, fabrication and manufacturing. These techniques may operate in discrete, batch, continuous or repetitive modes. Facility processes, on the other hand, include facilities such as ships, airports, space stations, private and public facilities. They manage the consumption, access, energy and HVAC.

Another process comes under the supervisory control and data acquisition system is the infrastructure processes. They can either be the public or private infrastructures, including the wastewater treatment and collection, water treatment and distribution, transmission, civil defense siren systems, electrical power distribution, gas and oil pipelines as well as the huge interaction systems.There are multiple subsystems often present in the SCADA system. There is the apparatus that provides users all the processed information and the process of passing through this human operator's alert monitoring is named the Human-Machine Interface (HMI). Besides, there presents a supervisory system that has access to all the needed details regarding the process thus sending them to the control commands.

There has been some ongoing confusion between the supervisory control and data acquisition system with the distributed control systems. Basically the SCADA does not have direct control over the processes but it refers to the system that coordinates the processes thus indirectly covering the system as well. The aroused confusion may be due to the new telecommunications technology that aids to enable low latency communications, high speed and reliability. Disregard of the distinctive differences between the two systems, they can be eliminated as they are to be determined culturally. In fact, the differences will become less significant when communication infrastructures of higher capacity are made available.

As a matter of fact, there are solutions in the SCADA system containing the constituents of distributed control system. Easy logic processes are effortlessly executed without involving the master computer due to the presence of a smart PLC or something called the Ladder Logic. They are block programming languages usually used to create programs running on RTU or PLC.
