What is the SCADA System?


A SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system is a system that consists of a number of remote terminal units (RTU) that collect the field data and connected back to the station master through the communication system.

Accurate and timely data (usually a real-time) provide optimization of the operation of the plant and process. Another advantage is more efficient, more reliable and more important, safe operation. All this results in the operating cost is lower compared with the previous non-automated systems.

There is a reasonable level of confusion between the definition of SCADA systems and process control systems. SCADA have additional remote control or remote operation. The question is not how 'far' - that usually means more of a distance so that the distance between the location and control of the location controlled very large direct-wire control is not useful (for example, a communication link important component of the system).

SCADA successful installation depends on using proven and reliable technology, with comprehensive and adequate training of staff in the operating system. There is a history of failed SCADA systems - factors that contribute to this system, including inadequate integration of the various components of the system.

Today hardware reliability is less of a problem, but the increasing software complexity is producing new challenges. It should be noted in passing that many operators judge a SCADA system not only by the smooth performance of the RTUs, communication links and the master station (all falling under the umbrella of SCADA system) but also the field devices (both transducers and control devices).

Dust Explosions in Home and Industrial Workshops: More Common Than You Think, But Preventable


Dust, particles and fibers floating around in a home or industrial workshop can often be a lot more than just a nuisance or threat to your employees' health. Dust of various types can easily cause highly destructive dust explosions, as well, and destroy your business in a matter of seconds. And if you're found negligent (i.e. you know that you have airborne dust and did not have any or the right dust filtration system in place), your insurance may not cover anything.

Wood and other airborne dust is very similar to grain dust, and can ignite in a similar way to grain silo explosions. This can easily happen in a large or small workshop, even if you have vacuums or other collectors in place, simply because of residual dust that is left over or not captured by those vacuums or other units. Dust explosions (deflagration) typically require five conditions to be met for them to occur: 1) combustible dust, 2) dust suspended in the air at a sufficiently high concentration, 3) a confined space 4) oxygen or other oxidant, and 5) any ignition source.

Coal dust, sawdust, and magnesium dust cause a lot of dust explosions, but grain, flour, sugar, even powdered metals like aluminum and titanium can also ignite under the right conditions (above). The problem is that in many workshops, there are almost always two of the main conditions for a dust explosion being met--there's always oxygen present, dust in the air, and there are multiple ignition sources, from cigarettes to torches, sparks from machines, grinders, etc. And you don't know exactly when the proper amount of dust is in the air to facilitate an explosion - this is why they occur without warning and seemingly from 'out of nowhere'.

The best way to prevent a dust explosion is to have source capture dust extractors or air filtration units with HEPA filters in place at the machines where the dust is being produced, but also have the appropriate number of room air filtration units running as well, to clean up the residual dust in the air, and give you the Federal or State OSHA required number of clean air changes per hour (to keep the air clean and safe, and avoid hefty OSHA fines). Many business owners will use a combination of source capture units with industrial cyclone dust collectors attached to the central HVAC system, or several source capture units near the machines, and several portable dust collectors on the floor or hanging from the ceiling.

Regardless of what type of dust you have floating around in your business, it's just better to not take chances and install the proper combination of source capture, cyclone HVAC based units or portable units to ensure that the air is clean. Without the dust in the air, you pretty much can't have a dust explosion, and you'll certainly prevent employee health problems, downtime from illness, OSHA fines, and other unnecessary expenses.

Safeguard the business you've worked so hard to build and make sure that dust is being removed regularly. And for a tip, make sure the dust collectors you choose have pre-filters, which stop the larger particles from prematurely clogging the HEPA filters (extends the life of the HEPA filters and saves you money).

The Key Components Behind Robotics and Automation


When you think of "robot," what do you envision? Does your robot walk upright like "C3PO" or roll like "R2D2?" Does your robot have a rigid mechanical face or an expressionistic soft face? Does it pick up objects or does it function as a robotic vacuum? Perhaps your intelligent system works in the medical field or in robotic welding. Since there are a number of different uses for robotics and automation, it's reasonable to assume there are many, many robot design options. To begin thinking about how these complex machines move, we need to look to physics, science, math and engineering.

One of the primary components used in robotic automation is the actuator, which converts stored energy into movement. Most actuators are electric motors (brushed and brushless DC motors, to be exact), although chemical and compressed air actuators exist as well. Stepper motors rotate in easy-to-control motions, commanded by a controller rather than a sensor. Piezo or Ultrasonic motors use rapidly vibrating piezo-ceramic elements, which ultimately cause motion. Air muscles work with compressed air, behaving similarly to human muscles which contract and expand. Elastic nanotubes are in experimental stages right now but appear promising, holding high levels of stored energy.

Locomotion is a key component of robotics and automation. Some prototypes roll on one to four wheels. For instance, NASA's "Robonaut" and "Urbie," Carnegie Mellon University's "Ballbot," not to mention characters like George Lucas's "R2D2" and The Jetson's "Rosie," all roll around. However, several robots like Honda's "ASIMO," can walk. The Anybot "Dexter Robot" can jump and MIT Leg Laboratory has developed complex robots that can trot, run, pace and bound. Even still, some robots, like those used in the military, are best suited for flight. Snaking motion robots have been used to save construction workers who were buried in a wreck. Essex University devised robotic fish for research purposes too. There is a place for every type of locomotion in industrial robotics.

For some, human interaction is the end-all and be-all of robotics and automation. At Disney World, the "Imagineers" developed singing, blinking, winking, emotional robots that almost seem like real people. Researchers say that the future of robots is the ability to communicate with humans through facial expressions, speech and gestures, rather than simply on predictable programmed responses.
