Soil Remediation?

Soil remediation is part of a broader process called environmental remediation. It is the collective term used for different techniques used to purify and revitalize soil. Problems are generally caused by contaminants which are substances either currently causing undesirable effect or will possibly cause an undesirable effect in the future. The main aim of remediation efforts is the reduction of these contaminant concentrations within the soil to lower levels so that land area will be more suitable for use without the environmental risks.

This process involves setting aside a landfill for contaminated soil which is extracted using current technology. The contaminated soil is transported to the landfill and purified soil is often used to replace the area where the contaminated soil was extracted.

Now, newer and more effective methods are being developed, thanks to the fast advancement of our current technology. Most of these efforts for soil remediation are structured at national government levels to rid the ground of harmful contaminants making it suitable to be used as dwellings, farms, and wildlife habitat. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, issues directives on the approach to soil remediation. These directives are collated to form the country's soil remediation standards. The Council of the Ministers of the Environment in Canada provides support to each province's efforts of remediation. The United Kingdom and Australia are also two countries known to actively engage in land remediation strategies.

Basic Breakdown of SCADA Systems

SCADA is the acronym for 'Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition' and the term is generally applied in the context industrial control applications, facility processes or infrastructure management. A SCADA system includes not just a supervisory computing unit for acquiring data and sending commands to a system but also Human Machine Interfaces (HMI's), Remote Terminal Units (RTU's) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's).

It is worth noting that in the past a distinction was made between SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS's) but that the differences between the two systems are becoming less defined. Both technologies have advanced to provide quite similar monitoring and control solutions in more recent times.

Most of the control actions in a SCADA system are automated by RTU's and PLC's based on preset requirements. RTU's connect sensors within the process by sending digital data to the supervisory 'computer' and whilst PLC's fill a similar data acquisition role they offer more versatility and are customisable to perform more specific automation tasks. Newer and increasing applications of 'smart' PLC's and RTU's allow these components to manage non-critical or routine tasks autonomously without drawing on the resources of the master computer.

Operators and system maintenance personnel utilise the HMI (Human Machine Interface) in order to review various portions of data within the system. The Operator will then use this data to control various aspects of the process. In most cases the HMI is linked up to the SCADA system's software and databases and it is set to provide trending data and diagnostic data. Technical information examples include machine or sensor schematics and expert-level troubleshooting guides. Management information examples include logistics data, productivity data and maintenance schedules.

HMI's are often set to display data in graph and diagram formats for ease of interpretation. Such routine 'reports' and schematics are just one aspect of the SCADA HMI. Arguably the most important function of the SCADA system is that of alarm handling. The system monitors all aspects of a process and when certain 'alarm' conditions are met one or more actions occurs such as notifying the operator via email, text or the system itself. It is important to discuss cascading alarm handling with the SCADA engineer or a similar professional to ensure that the initial alarm event is not lost beneath subsequent alarm triggers.

A universal requirement for SCADA systems is that they are built and installed with durability and reliability in mind. Components need to be hardy and able to withstand varying temperature ranges and vibration levels, well as extreme voltages. Systems of critical importance would be setup with built in redundancies (in hardware and communication), multiple servers and disaster recovery sites sometimes to the point of having multiple control centres which are fully equipped to take over failed processes and operations.

What are SCADA Systems?

Suisun City, CA - Mission SOLANO, local artists from the Fairfield Visual Arts Association and the Lawler House Gallery, along with Earth Day Solano volunteers, will create six pieces of unique “garbage art”, created from the trash collected throughout Suisun City on Earth Day Solano, Saturday, April 20th from 10 am – 2 pm.

Three years ago the Earth Day Solano vision, inspired by the gorgeous downtown waterfront in Suisun City, blossomed:

You allowed us to clean up your discarded, thrown away,
trampled-on refuse; we recycled it and now present you with
a piece of art, more beautiful than you thought you could imagine.

This year’s Earth Day Solano art project – six pieces of original art created on the spot on Earth Day April 20th using trash collected from Suisun City targeted cleanup zones – glows as a tangible expression of the Mission SOLANO vision for recycling people. Inspired by the documentary “Waste Land” by artist Vik Muniz, artists came together under the leadership of artist, Aria Zuloaga to plan the art project. “

After watching the movie Waste Land, a group of us from Lawler House Gallery and the Fairfield Visual Arts Association collaborated to create the concept and images for six temporary live art installations on April 20th,” Zuloaga reflects. “We believed in this project from the beginning and after weeks of preparation we’re anxious to see the images and the art unfold. It is a labor of love for our community and for our planet.”

Art became a central part of Earth Day Solano in 2012, when Gilbert Rangel, local esteemed recycled materials artist, created a piece of recycled metals art now on permanent display in the city chambers of Suisun City (see below).

Groundwater Remediation, A Pressing Need in Today's Times

Water pollution today has reached alarming levels in most parts of the world. Surface freshwater bodies like ponds, lakes, streams and rivers have become increasingly polluted. This has resulted in groundwater becoming an important source of drinking water in many countries. In the U.S alone over half the population depends on groundwater supply for daily water needs. Groundwater is today used for a variety of purposes from agriculture to industrial, to irrigate large farms as well as in the production of goods.

Groundwater pollution causes
